We Love Decks!

There’s Much More to Decks Than Just Putting Down Deck Boards

From the deck pictured above:

I asked the homeowner if they were having water issues under the deck. They said yes, how did you know?

Between the dirt pattern under the deck and the fact that a huge part of the hip roof above was draining right under the deck, it takes a person that pays attention to details and cares to build a deck correctly.

The added drain pipe redirected the water away from the house and deck and was an inexpensive fix. If done after the deck was installed this would have cost at least $1,000 to remove all boards and install.

Foresight and always looking out for customers is one of our strong points.

We care a lot!

This next deck is a perfect example of what happens when a deck is installed incorrectly

Here, if you look at the deck boards, they are so tight that the deck boards are actually lifting up in places, like a rolling hill. Besides this, it also causes water to accumulate because it has nowhere to go. This causes the deck to retain water, which causes the deck boards to rot much faster.

Knowing how to space and install deck boards is crucial. The process varies based on the seasons, humidity and various other factors. Your installer should know this!

Here’s the same project. This is the wall with the siding removed.

The person that installed the old deck did not understand flashing and how to install it.

This led to sections of the house sheathing having to be replaced due to heavy water damage. You could literally stick your finger through their house.

Knowing how to properly water proof a deck is the difference between a project that slowly deteriorates your house or one that adds beauty and peace to your home!

Same deck after all of the repairs were made. This customer went with a Trex composite that really compliments the area very well.

Their walls were repaired, the siding was put back much neater than the original installer and the customer is thrilled with the fit and finish.

We added the hose spigot, the light next to the door, post lighting, electric, the sliding glass door and the beautiful rails to this deck, which leads me to the next point!

Decks Are More Than Just a Surface to Walk On

They can also have feelings built in.

The deck featured in this section is a perfect example:

I went over every detail of this deck with these homeowners, ran out and got samples so they could pick out their colors and see the material before it was installed. We then went over options and features.

This deck has accent lighting. Most installers prefer solar caps because they are easy. Pop them on and done! Just that little shortcut takes away from a deck, in my opinion. We installed a smart transformer that allows them to control their lighting directly from their phone along with a remote and directly from the transformer.

Why does this make a difference? Let’s picture 2 scenarios:

Scenario 1

It’s night time and you have a few friends over for drinks. It’s an energetic evening and you’re all having fun, talking about life and all sorts of fun topics. These are those little moments that matter!

So, you have your accent lights turned up, lighting the space perfectly with no need for a wall light that may end up too bright and add distraction.

Scenario 2

It’s a work night. The kids are finally off to bed, and you just want 30 minutes to unwind with your spouse. You grab your drink of choice and you head out to the deck. You both sit down in 2 lounge chairs next to each other and just sink into the chairs.

Now, with the lights turned down to the point that your deck has a faint glow, this space is a completely different vibe! Same deck, different feeling!
